Gary Hoilett is one of the most influential, longest-serving, and respected soccer figures in North Carolina. For nearly thirty years, he has tirelessly served as a coach, an administrator, and an advocate for the sport at virtually every level. Born and raised in Jamaica, Gary’s coaching journey in the United States began when he relocated to North Carolina and began his legendary high school coaching career as the Junior Varsity coach at Charlotte Catholic High School. A position he held from 1994 until 1997, when he took over the varsity soccer programs, a position he still holds today. Gary has achieved extraordinary coaching success with Charlotte Catholic. In 19 years as the head men’s coach, Gary has accrued an overall record of 266-43-34, including 3 state championships and finishing as runner-up an additional 4 times. In 27 years of coaching the women’s team at Charlotte Catholic, Gary has accumulated an overall record of 523-72-43, won another 3 state championships, and was runner-up on 2 other occasions. Combined, Gary has amassed an incredible 789 wins against only 115 losses, 77 ties, and 6 state championships. His teams have won 22 conference championships, 1 co-conference championship and 17 times went unbeaten in conference. He has produced multiple All-Americans and State Players of the Year and consistently develops players to advance to play at the collegiate level. Gary has been well decorated by the NCSCA for his accomplishments. He is a 3-time winner of the State Coach of the Year, a 6-time Regional Coach of the Year, and has been named Conference Coach of the Year 14 times. He was inducted into the NCSCA Field of Honor in 2017 and selected to coach in the prestigious East/West All-Star Game as well as the NCSCA Clash of the Carolinas Showcase.
Gary has been equally instrumental in promoting high school soccer and the athletes who participate. He is a 27-year member of the NCSCA and has been a member of the United Soccer Coaches for 23 years. He has served as a Regional Chairman in the association since 2001 and has been a Board Member since 2003. Gary has also volunteered with the Clash of the Carolinas Showcase since its inception in 2007. Gary also spent 8 years as part of the West Coaching Staff in the NC State Games Junior/Senior Showcase events each summer. In addition to his high school coaching duties, Gary has also been a prominent member of the club coaching community. He began his club coaching career with Charlotte United in 1999 eventually becoming the Girls Director of Coaching for the club from 2003 to 2008. He took a leave from coaching club soccer to join the coaching staff at Wingate University. His roles included the men’s assistant coach as well as the head coach of the Developmental Squad. During his tenure with Wingate, the university finished with an overall record of 44-28-3, won a conference title in 2010 and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Gary returned to Charlotte United (now Charlotte Soccer Association) in 2012 where he continues to coach. Success has not escaped him at the club level. He has won 2 Kepner Cups and been a semi-finalist another 4 times. Gary Hoilett has many outstanding contributions to soccer in North Carolina in his 30 plus years here as a high school coach, a club coach, a collegiate coach and as an administrator. His name is synonymous with success at every level. Gary is also one of the most well-respected coaches in the state, admired for his character, integrity, and demeanor. A role model for all coaches and an ideal candidate for the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame.
